Oak dresser to media console
A New Role for an Old Favorite
I saw the potential in this oak dresser right away. It was beautifully made, with distinctive doors and a generous size that felt just right for a media console. As larger TVs take the place of traditional wall units, pieces like this offer a beautiful way to bring vintage character into a living room.
Removing the old finish revealed the wood grain beneath. General Finishes stain and topcoat gave the wood a lighter, fresh finish, while simple brass pulls complemented the decorative center doors.
Inside, I kept the vintage drawer liners. They were in perfect condition—and far too much vintage-y fun to lose. Some details deserve to stay exactly as they are.
Now ready for life beneath a big screen, this dresser brings plenty of storage and a personality all its own.
I loved this antique dresser’s character from the start, but I knew it needed a complete redo. What looked like natural wood from a distance turned out to be thick, old paint. There was plenty of work ahead before its next chapter could begin.
The goal was to freshen it up while preserving the details that drew me to it: the stepped top, curved apron, and especially those beautiful carved handles.
After repairs and preparation, I used Benjamin Moore products throughout the painted finish. A soft painted body and creamy tops gave it a lighter feel. I kept the original handles and finished them in gold leaf, bringing their intricate details into focus. A replacement center knob and botanical drawer liners completed the transformation.
It’s a fresh look, with the character I fell in love with still at the heart of it.

Mid-century dresser / Details worth restoring
Beautiful from the Start
The clean lines and mid-century modern design of this dresser were stunning from the start. I knew that with a little love, it could be brought back to its original glory.
This transformation was all about the details. Along with damaged veneer and dingy original hardware, the old finish had crackling and plenty of scratches. With those areas addressed and a General Finishes topcoat, the surface is now buttery smooth. Each improvement helped the beauty of the piece come through again.
The finished dresser still has the warm wood, distinctive pulls, and simple lines that first caught my eye. Sometimes the most satisfying transformation is seeing a piece look like itself again—just cared for and ready for its next home.
